In Inglorious Bastards, why does Col. Hans Landa & co. shoot through the floorboards?

Well, he had no idea there'd be an escape route in the basement, so he figured if they all stood around and shot through the floor boards, they wouldn't miss. Plus the guy showed him where they were all laying under the floor boards.
